Zentralfriedhof


For those in search of silence and serenity during their trip, a visit to the Zentralfriedhof Vienna would provide the needs. The Zentralfriedhof is the central cemetery situated in the district of Simmering, Vienna. It is the largest and most famous cemetery among Vienna’s 50 cemeteries. The cemetery has also been one of the top tourist spots since its opening in 1874 providing education and pleasure to the visitors.


The cemetery, 2.4 kilometers wide and with not less than 3.3 million interred in the place, is the second largest cemeteries in the whole of Europe. In this cemetery lie the bodies of many famous and notable people like Beethoven and Schubert who have been in the place since 1888. The center of the cemetery, the church is actually named after Dr. Karl Lueger- Gedachtniskirche. In addition to the Catholic section of the cemetery is a small Russian Orthodox burial area along with two Jewish cemeteries. It also has a special section called the Ehrengräber where composers, writers,, artists and other politicians are buried. Aside from these sections, the cemetery also has the Presidential Vault which served as the final resting place of Dr. Karl Renner, Dr. Theodore Körner, Dr. Adolf Schärf and Dr. Franz Josef Jonas who were all former presidents. In 1975, it was honored by the great Wolfgang Ambros in his song, “Es lebe der Zentalfriedof which literally means Long live the Zentalfriedof.


What makes this place so special and interesting is the thought that this is the place where the major prides of Vienna are buried. It is one place where they have laid together in peace. It is a place where tourists see the tombs of famous people and at least pay them some respect. A visit to this place is moving and will surely make somebody come back.
