Sisi Chapel
Hidden in the Wienerwald next to Am Himmel , this chapel is a masterly piece of architecture that is being surrounded by beautiful English Gardens.
Located in the Wienerwald in Sievering in the Dobling District in Vienna, Austria, the Sisi Chapel was constructed to commemorate the marriage of the Imperial Couple Franz Joseph I and Elizabeth in Vienna on April 24, 1854.
Johann Carl Freiherr von Sothen bespoke architect Johan A. Gaben to modify and custom-made the design of the Am Himmel Chapel located somewhere in the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald) in Sievering. The chapel was then build up from 1854-1856 based on the proposal and idea of Johan A. Gaben under the city builder Josef Kastan. It was later sanctified to Saints Elizabeth, Joseph and Francis of Assisi; all patron saints of the Imperial Couple.
In addition to its commemorative significance on that momentous event, the Sisi Chapel was built to function as the gravesite for the client and his wife Franziska.
