Maria Am Gestade

The church called Maria am Gestade or St. Mary on the Strand (sometimes even called at the Church of St. Mary’s on the Bank) is considered as one of the oldest and finest buildings located in Vienna, Austria. By looking at this religious building, you can see an example of the Gothic architecture that was prevalent in the city few centuries ago.

The Maria am Gestade is a famous worshipping site located at the Salvatorgasse 12. This church is as stunning as the other churches all over Vienna. However, most of the people go here in Maria am Gestade to pray. There are more worshippers here in Maria am Gestade than tourists who wish to take home a memory of the church by capturing photos as well as videos.

The Church of St. Mary’s on the Bank is also popular among sailors and fishermen. It was only in 1409 that the church became a part of the Diocese of Passau. Unfortunately, when Napoleon Bonaparte stayed in Vienna in 1809, it became a stable and a storage room. The church was consecrated again in 1812.

The part of the church where the altars were situated can only be seen from afar. Tourist and locals can only stay behind the gate where they can light candles and pray.
