The Palais Liechtenstein, or the Liechtenstein Museum, is where the fabulous art collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein is safely kept. The collection is so huge that the displays that can be seen at the Liechtenstein Museum are only a part of the whole accumulation. The items inside the Liechtenstein Museum were collected since the seventeenth century by Prince Karl 1 of Liechtenstein. Aside from him, his descendants also gathered various pieces of art that are now included in the museum’s collection.
The Palais Liechtenstein is just one of the palaces owned by Prince Johann Adam Andreas I. However, he was still not satisfied with the grandiosity of Liechtenstein which he called a “mere summer palace.” He then commissioned Domencio Martinelli. Santino Bussi adorned the insides of the palace with grand staircases and created a hall that was made out of marble. The areas surrounding the palace became a stunning Baroque-style garden filled with statues as well as topiaries that were Baroque-inspired.
But there is one thing that sets the Liechtenstein Museum apart from any other museums in the world. It has the Peter Paul Rubens Room where the Decius Mus Cycle is being showcased. The Decius Muc Cycle tells and shows the story of the ancient Roman consul who became a hero when he fought against the Latins.
The cycle is composed of eight paintings. Out of all the paintings in the Decius Mus Cycle, the death of the consul is considered as the grandest. Not only that it is grandiose but dramatic as well.
