Donaukanal

Donaukanal or Danube Canal in English used to be a former arm of the Danube River more accurately than a canal. A canal is the term used for artificial channels of water. The Donaukanal measures 17.3 kilometers long situated within the city entirety of Vienna, Austria. It branches off and split from the main river in Dobling and converges again in Simmering. This results to the creation of an island wherein Brigittenau and Leopoldstadt, two out of the twenty-three districts of Vienna are to be found. The Donaukanal borders Innere Stadt, the city center of Vienna.

Joggers, cyclists, and skaters enjoy engaging in their activities in paths along both sides of the Donaukanal. Boat rides originating from Schwedenplatz go around Brigittenau and Leopoldstadt to the delight of those who love boat riding. Lately, summer months have been a significant season for turning the vicinity into a more appealing and eye-catching recreational area wherein cafes, flea markets and other attractions are present.

There have been attempts to change the name of the Donaukanal. One of the names suggested was Kleine Danau, which literally means Little Danube in English language. However, attempts like this turned out to be ineffective. Heinz Conrad was captivated by the banks of the Donaukanal that he even featured it in his song “A Schrage Wiesn”. The song relates about the hero named Franz, who prefers taking a nap on the grassy slopes near the Donaukanal instead of going on a holiday.
