That depends slightly from one bus company to the next and whether you take a regular bus or a VIP bus. The journey is a 9-10 hour journey so I do definitely recommend for you to take a VIP bus as its considerably more comfortable and not all that much more expensive.

All buses from Bangkok to Chiang Mai leave from the Northern terminal which is at the Mo Chit bus station. A VIP bus ticket from Bangkok to Chiang Mai should cost around around 650 Thai Baht.
